stern TV Special - Stiftung Warentest: Food processors with cooking function

Chopping, weighing, stirring, cooking - food processors with a cooking function such as the Thermomix take most of the work out of cooking. Stiftung Warentest tested seven appliances with prices ranging from 265 to 1500 euros, including Bosch, Kenwood, Lidl and Vorwerk. The Thermomix came in second place. Two appliances are weak in terms of durability.

The cult appliance from Vorwerk is followed by a machine also costing 1400 euros, with a difference of half a mark. However, the Thermomix must be supplemented with accessories costing around 100 euros to achieve the same level of equipment. The Lidl model also requires additional purchases. The two cheaper machines in the test offer less convenience, the better one is the Moulinex for 300 euros.

All models can knead, stir, whip, weigh and steam. Their container can also be heated. Roasting goulash is also no problem for most appliances with their heated base. However, roasting flavours only develop from a temperature of 140 degrees Celsius, some appliances only manage 120 degrees.

The practical test reveals major differences: Almost all appliances fail when it comes to chopping onions. The Kenwood is the only one to whip really fluffy cream, unlike the Xiaomi, the Lidl Silvercrest purees baby food only coarsely and leaves large chunks behind. The Thermomix weakens when cutting leeks.

To test the durability, the testers simulated several years of use. For example, by heating oil to maximum temperature 300 times. Only those that had also processed 150 cycles of "sponge dough" and 300 cycles of "wholemeal bread dough" with a special mixture with the consistency of dough without blemishes were awarded the "durable" rating. Six out of seven appliances achieved this. In another, the steamer insert caused problems.
