stern TV - Driven to death in a drunken stupor: The verdict in the Theresa Stahl case

At only 20 years old, Theresa Stahl dies because she is hit by a drunk driver at night. Her family is now campaigning against drunk driving.

She was fun-loving and popular - and she only lived to be 20. In April 2017, Theresa Stahl was hit by a car on a country road and succumbed to her injuries in the hospital a few days later. The driver of the car had 2.89 per mille alcohol in his blood.

Theresa is on her way home that night with her boyfriend. Because they had been drinking a little, they abandoned the car and were given a lift by an acquaintance. They walk the last stretch to their apartment.

At around 80 kilometers per hour, a car suddenly speeds up from behind and hits Theresa. She hits her head against the windshield, is thrown into a field and seriously injured. The then 18-year-old driver of the car, Niclas H., simply drives on, but can be caught by the police a short time later.

The verdict: in 2019, Niclas H. is initially sentenced to a fine - for his "drunken stupor", not for the act itself. According to an expert opinion, he was too drunk to be culpable.

But then a witness unexpectedly came forward and reported that one of the inmates had said "Kill her!" to Niclas H. on the night of the crime. If this statement could have been proven, it would have resulted in a murder charge. As a result, the trial is completely reopened in September 2020.

On October 27, the verdict is finally reached: Niclas H. is sentenced to 15 months' probation for involuntary manslaughter and failure to render assistance under juvenile criminal law. In addition, he must undergo therapy and perform 400 hours of community service. According to the judge, he is not allowed to drink alcohol for two years and will not get his driver's license back in the foreseeable future.
